SOF Week 2026
SOF Week 2026 convened in Tampa, Florida, from May 18–21, solidifying its status as the world's premier special operations summit. Co-sponsored by USSOCOM and the Global SOF Foundation, the event—formerly known as SOFIC—is the largest annual gathering of its kind, attracting global military leaders, government stakeholders, and industry innovators. From May 19–21, the event’s massive exhibition floor took center stage, featuring next-generation tactical gear, multi-domain communication networks, and autonomous systems from leading defense contractors and tech giants.
The 2026 CAPEX: "Battle in the Bay"
On May 20, 2026, the U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) executed its signature Capabilities Exercise (CAPEX), officially titled "Battle in the Bay," along the downtown Tampa waterfront. As the highly anticipated centerpiece of SOF Week 2026, this live-action demonstration entertained thousands of civilian spectators while serving a vital strategic purpose: showcasing the speed, multi-domain interoperability, and precision firepower of modern Special Operations Forces (SOF).
A major milestone of the 2026 CAPEX was its unprecedented level of international integration. U.S. forces operated seamlessly alongside contingents from ten partner nations. Notably, this included the historic debut of a dedicated Capability Demonstration team from the Indian Army's Special Forces, reflecting deepening global defense partnerships and expanding allied interoperability.

Operational Execution & Demonstrated Capabilities
Set in a fully integrated live operational environment, the high-intensity scenario demonstrated complex counter-terrorism, unconventional warfare, and hostage rescue tactics. The May 20 exercise highlighted several synchronized phases:
Intelligence & Autonomous Overwatch
Before the kinetic assault began, the operational area was continuously monitored by cutting-edge autonomous platforms. Drones and unmanned surface vessels (USVs)—such as the newly showcased high-speed combat USVs—provided real-time intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) data to command elements, proving how AI and autonomy now shape the tactical edge.
Dynamic Rotary-Wing Assault
The skies over the Hillsborough River roared to life as military helicopters, including MH-60 Black Hawks, agile MH-6M Little Birds, and CH-47 Chinooks, executed aggressive, low-altitude maneuvers. Elite operators demonstrated precision fast-rope insertions, rapidly deploying from hovering aircraft directly onto simulated target objectives.

Maritime Surface Strike
Down on the water, heavily armed Combatant Craft Assault (CCA) vessels tore through the bay. Naval special warfare operators executed high-speed intercepts, evasive maneuvering, and shore approaches while laying down a massive wall of simulated suppressive fire (blanks) from heavy machine guns to cover the advancing ground assault teams.

Direct Action & Extraction
Once on the ground, the integrated coalition forces breached the simulated enemy compound amid a flurry of explosive pyrotechnics and coordinated gunfire. After securing the high-value target (HVT), the teams demonstrated complex exfiltration techniques. This included rapid waterborne egress via tactical boats and dramatic aerial extractions, such as operators being hoisted out via a SPIE (Special Patrol Infiltration/Exfiltration) rig dangling from a helicopter.

Ultimately, the 2026 CAPEX provided a visceral, real-world look at how the technologies, weapons systems, and tactical vehicles showcased inside the convention center are actively utilized by joint forces in the heat of combat.
